Last week it was pretty hot so we thought Mochi might appreciate a dip in the pool to cool off. He doesn’t look too pleased.

We received this ad for mobile dog grooming in the mail the other day. Seems like an interesting business model.

I’d just like to point out that the dog in the picture (not Mochi) looks considerably less happy than the dog in the company’s logo. She clearly does not like her haircut! I’m glad they included her to show the potential side effects of their service, but why not find a happy dog for your ad?

5 Things I Never Thought I’d Own

I find myself in possession of a number of items that 10 years ago I never thought I’d own.

A domestic car. This is definitely the biggest one. Growing up on the west coast and being under 35, the thought of driving an American-made car was never even on the radar. But it turns out they’re not all crap, and some are now considered “best-in-class.” And I figure it helps to know people on the inside should something major break.
A yoga mat.
A cell phone. I was kind of anti-cell-phones 10 years ago. Not sure exactly why. Now no one in my generation even has a landline.
A dog. Don’t tell Mochi, but I wasn’t ready to commit to taking care of another living thing for 12-14 years. That was a serious committment, and life seemed pretty good without that extra “responsibility.” Now the house feels empty without him around.
A fake Christmas tree. I’m still not 100% on-board with the fake Christmas tree, but it does have certain advantages including low acquisition cost and effort, no recurring costs (don’t have to buy a new one each year), easy storage (don’t have to worry about disposal), being “green” (not needlessly chopping down a young tree), and not having to vacuum pine needles. And since we’re not home over Christmas, it allows us to still decorate and not be too Scroogy. But there’s no replacing the real-tree goodness; the selection process — either at the lot or in the forest, the fresh piny smell, the imperfection of the branches. Someday we’ll graduate to the real thing.

Inside Dog, Schminside Dog

Who says shih tzu’s aren’t hiking dogs? Mochi proved the naysayers wrong this weekend on his ascent of the 2500 ft Mission Peak in Fremont. It was warm on the trail and there was almost no tree cover. But fur coat and all — and panting all the way — he pushed on like a champ and bagged his second summit. (Mt. Diablo last year was #1)

So I was having some issues with my thumb over the lens but I’m still getting used to the camera on my new phone. So thirsty!

Since the trail was so dusty and he doesn’t have much in the way of ground clearance, he kind of looked like Pigpen shuffling along in a cloud of dust. He got kind of dirty from that and his frequent “lay-down, not going any farther” belly flops. But he was a soldier; six miles roundtrip was a new personal best.

We went straight from there to camping at Lake Del Valle in Livermore, so it was just a solid weekend of roughing it for the little guy. Looks like he’s finally regaining consciousness though after 48 hrs of “hiking hangover” puppy exhaustion.
