George Carlin Baseball vs. Football

This is an oldie but a goodie, and thought I would share as the baseball season winds down and in advance of the Huskies visit to South Bend tomorrow.  Hopefully they have better luck stopping the “sustained ground attack” against the Irish than they did against Stanford.

Book Review: The Baseball Economist

I think I ordered J.C. Bradbury’s The Baseball Economist: The Real Game Exposed as an Amazon-order-filler to get to the $25 free shipping level.  And as such, it’s an OK read.
The book is organized in a Freakanomics-style with a series of stand-alone chapters exploring baseball intricacies with statistical and economic principles.  For example, Bradbury discusses [...]

New Yankee Stadium vs. Fenway

Bryn and I had the opportunity to see the Mariners play (and win!) at the new Yankee Stadium and Fenway this past weekend.  The two stadiums offered two very different experiences so I thought I would write up this comparison.
Monument Park was cool.  It’s like a mini Hall of Fame, except with only Yankees players.  [...]

East Coast Trip

I’m looking forward to our 4th of July weekend trip to New York and Boston.
Mostly because our baseball tickets came today — we’ll see the Mariners at the new Yankee Stadium and then at Fenway.
And I hear Boston has a pretty good fireworks show for the 4th too.

Pinch Me (Again)

Yes, yes, I know it’s only May 3rd, but the Mariners are in 1st place.
Awesome extra-inning win this afternoon.

OK, I’m Not a Power Hitter

So when I hit an opposite-field inside-the-park home run in Tuesday’s softball game, it was kind of a big deal.  I think it was my first home run of any kind since I was 12.
Did you know?
The Major League record for the longest homer-less streak belongs to Bill Holbert, who singled his way to that [...]

Pinch Me

Yes, yes, I know it’s only April 11th, but the Mariners are in 1st place.

It’s Baseball Season!

I’m pretty pumped to be sitting here working and watching the M’s via my new Slingbox.  Great to hear Niehaus’s voice – it’s been a sign of spring for so many years.
UPDATE 12:30pm
Even more pumped to get to see a victory.  May not be able to make it the Coliseum this weekend for their series [...]

Spring Training in PHX

For the second year in a row, we took a weekend trip to the desert for some baseball and to meet up with friends.
On Friday, we watched future big-leaguer Chris Gimenez score what turned out to be the game winning run against the A’s.  Our seats were in the shade, yet I still managed to [...]

2009 Mariners Commercials

The Mariners released their new TV commercials today, with the tagline “A new day, a new way.”  Hopefully that means fewer than 100 losses.  You can check out the commercials here, but they’re not really doing it for me.  I mean, they definitely can’t compare to these classics.
