Excellent post John, thanks for sharing. The studies cited on the ACS are really interesting, and somewhat surprising (at least to me!)

Clergy have a designated spot because many people like to be visited by their pastor while in the hospital. Clergy also lead religious services in many hospitals. It has nothing to do with faith healing. Just like science is your religion, many (most) people believe in God, and their religion is important to them as well. Why shouldn't they be able to have their beliefs expressed by a visit from their pastor without someone going off about faith healing? It's more about comforting someone in a scary time. By the way, brain surgeons and cardiologists, and all doctors at the hospital, have their own reserved spots in areas we can't even get into. So don't worry. It's just a courtesy being extended to people who are at the hospital every single day tending to the needs of those under their care. It's just emotional or spiritual care instead of physical. And there are plenty of studies that show positive implications for religious intervention during sickness. I'll cite one of them: "Studies have found spirituality and religion are very important to the quality of life for some people with cancer. Although available research has not supported claims that spirituality can cure cancer or any other disease, the psychological benefits of praying may include reduction of stress and anxiety, promotion of a more positive outlook, and the strengthening of the will to live." (http://www.cancer.org/Treatment/TreatmentsandSideEffects/ComplementaryandAlternativeMedicine/MindBodyandSpirit/spirituality-and-prayer). So if it's good for some people, and it's not being crammed down your throat, I think you should just be happy that those folks are free to pursue what they believe in, just as you are.

I'm not sure. But you're right, surprising to see them rated higher than American Cancer Society on Charity Navigator.

Nick--Have you heard anything about how much of their money goes to the actual cause? I've been seeing things on-line about how little is used for cancer research, yet Charity Navigator gives them high marks. So, I'm confused! Now that I've had a better look at this organization though, they won't get a cent of my money!

Nice work, Nick! I've always wondered what that was about...but I'm typically either driving solo, or was wondering in the pre-smart phone era! I guessed as much as you described, but figured it had to do with the more modern water rights debate.
