Best and Worst Super Bowl Commercials – 2010

1. Google.  Does Google even need to advertise?  I believe this is the first time I’ve seen a Google ad on TV.  Very clean and simple, yet tells a great story.

2. eTrade.  I love these talking babies.

3. Bridgestone. A Hangover-inspired whale rescue mission, made possible by great tires.

4. Hyundai.  The future is full of uncertainty, [...]

Backcountry Ad

Backcountry.com is a great company because their employees are really passionate about all things outdoors.  But apparently their advertising team is passionate about something else too, as evidenced by this email ad I received last week.

So creative… great copywriting guys.

Focus on the Family to Waste Millions on Pro-Life Super Bowl Ad

Focus on the Family, the same ultra-conservative Christian group that brought you the best website ever, has now decided to blow approximately $3 million on a 30-second pro-life Super Bowl ad.
I haven’t yet seen the ad, which apparently features Heisman-winner Tim Tebow, but I would be surprised if it changes anyone’s opinion on the polarizing [...]

Yahoo’s Comeback Bid

Yahoo has been losing market share to Google for years, and now is determined to fight back.  In a bold move that surprisingly has garnered zero press and somehow went unnoticed by the few remaining Yahoo searchers, Yahoo has increased the maximum length of description text for search advertisers from 70 characters to 71 characters.

Merry Christmas!

Hope your holiday is stress-free and filled with family, friends, and love.
Impressive how this Green Chri$tma$ song was recorded over 50 years ago, but still rings true today.

“What’s the percentage in that?”

A Terrible Loss

I very rarely send anything out to the Shoes ‘R Us email list, partly because I’m busy, partly because I don’t want to bother people, and partly because I feel like I should have a really good offer when I do.
Such an offer came along Wednesday morning so I put together my email and blasted [...]

It’s Cyber Monday!

It’s Cyber Monday, the unofficial holiday of online retail.  The term Cyber Monday was first used in 2005, after e-tailers reported a big spike in website traffic the Monday after Thanksgiving 2004.  The reasoning was that shoppers would browse the brick-and-mortar stores over the weekend, and then use the high-speed connection at their offices when [...]

By Definition, an Accord is a Compromise

I thought this was a good ad for the Chevy Malibu.  It’s simple, confident, and takes a friendly jab at the competition.

Still, I think GM has a long way to go toward restoring customer confidence.  Maybe they’ll give you a discount on this car since you helped pay to build it.

Belated Veteran’s Day Video

This is a pretty well done video thanking our veterans for their service to our country.  Oh, and spoiler alert — it’s a Ford ad.  Not sure it ever made it on the air since it’s really long, but they’ve got a story to tell that wouldn’t fit in a 30-second or 60-second spot.

Thanks mom [...]
