Daylight savings time gained widespread use during World War I as a measure to conserve coal.  The theory was that if it was light out longer, people would burn less power lighting their homes in the evening.  Recent studies are inconclusive as to whether it is effective in that goal.

China has only time zone.  During the Communist revolution of 1949, Chinese leaders abolished the existing 5 time zones and unified the country under one clock.  For a country roughly the size of the U.S., 9:00 a.m. would be a very different time depending on which side of the country you were on.  In fact, if you were to step into Afghanistan from western China, it would be 3.5 hrs earlier.
