In the Old Testament of the Bible, Isaiah 35 prophesizes a “highway:”
It will be called the Way of Holiness.
The unclean will not journey on it;
it will be for those who walk in that Way;
wicked fools will not go about on it.
Is it possible the 2500 year-old text correctly predicted the creation of the Eisenhower’s interstate highway system, and even nailed the verse to the exact number of I-35, which runs north-south through America’s heartland?
For some devout Christians, the evidence (that verse) is overwhelming. Interstate 35 truly is the Highway of Holiness foreseen by the ancient Hebrews. Only perhaps too many wicked, unclean fools were driving on it, which resulted in that tragic 2007 bridge collapse in Minneapolis. Now there’s an extra variable for all you civil engineers to calculate into your designs!
Thankfully for every person who takes this seriously, there are thousands who can’t. But I think it illustrates the problem of interpreting literally what was clearly intended to be metaphor.
The truth is I-35 has been a next-door neighbor to far too many tragedies to be considered a Holy highway:
- The JFK assassination in Dallas
- The Waco massacre
- The Oklahoma City bombing
- The Fort Hood shooting
The real highway to holiness? US 50, because it leads skiing at Lake Tahoe. Hey, it’s called Heavenly for a reason!
