I find myself in possession of a number of items that 10 years ago I never thought I’d own.

  1. A domestic car.  This is definitely the biggest one. Growing up on the west coast and being under 35, the thought of driving an American-made car was never even on the radar.  But it turns out they’re not all crap, and some are now considered “best-in-class.”  And I figure it helps to know people on the inside should something major break.
  2. A yoga mat.
  3. A cell phone.  I was kind of anti-cell-phones 10 years ago.  Not sure exactly why.  Now no one in my generation even has a landline.
  4. A dog.  Don’t tell Mochi, but I wasn’t ready to commit to taking care of another living thing for 12-14 years.  That was a serious committment, and life seemed pretty good without that extra “responsibility.”  Now the house feels empty without him around.
  5. A fake Christmas tree.  I’m still not 100% on-board with the fake Christmas tree, but it does have certain advantages including low acquisition cost and effort, no recurring costs (don’t have to buy a new one each year), easy storage (don’t have to worry about disposal), being “green” (not needlessly chopping down a young tree), and not having to vacuum pine needles.  And since we’re not home over Christmas, it allows us to still decorate and not be too Scroogy.  But there’s no replacing the real-tree goodness; the selection process — either at the lot or in the forest, the fresh piny smell, the imperfection of the branches.  Someday we’ll graduate to the real thing.
