I finally went to The Rock after 2.5 years of living in the Bay Area.

On a side note, we went to Blockbuster to rent The Rock the night before but they didn’t have it.  Not that it was checked out already, but they didn’t have it all.  They did have Robocop III, though.  Interesting business decisions being made at Blockbuster.

Did You Know?

Prior to the Civil War, the U.S. Army built a fort on Alcatraz, with the intention of using the island’s strategic location as a defense-point for San Francisco Bay.  It’s first use as a prison was during the Civil War, when west-coast Confederate-sympathizers were locked up there.

I learned that and so much more.  Like the prison was eventually shut down because it was not cost effective to run and maintain.  Alcatraz only held an average of 260 prisoners, which was too small a number to justify the expensive, island set-up.

I’m sure being in jail sucks wherever you are, but having this view out of your cell block window must have made it even worse.  Civilization and freedom were just 1.5 miles away!

Thirty-six prisoners attempted to escape Alcatraz, but only 5 went unaccounted for.  Three of those were part of the same breakout, made famous by Clint Eastwood and cast in the movie Escape from Alcatraz.  Did they make it?

Definitely a recommended trip for history nerds like me.  I thought the audio tour was cool too.
