I heard an estimate that Americans have 1.5 million pairs of shoes sitting unworn in our closets, while 300 million people on this planet have never owned a pair of shoes. Enter Soles4Souls.org, a non-profit group dedicated to providing shoes for all those bare feet, “changing the world, one pair at a time.”
While we’re most concerned with comfort or style, shoes at their most basic function protect feet from cuts, scratches, and infections. In that sense, shoes are a very economical health-care plan. A $6 donation buys 3 new pairs of sandals for children in need, and is tax-deductible. A $10 donation buys a pair of new clogs.
Now that’s a charitable cause I can get behind! Everybody needs shoes!
