It’s been more than 10 years since I rode a bike consistently. I think I reached my bike-riding peak in the years right before getting my driver’s license. You were old enough to have places to go, but too young to drive there. So you rode your bike.
And it wasn’t a chore or a workout, it was just transportation. I remember biking to a swim meet and still having the energy to race. Now, after years of laziness behind the wheel, riding a bike is hard work.
I rode to the library yesterday to pick up a book, about 14 miles roundtrip, mostly flat. It felt good to use my legs to get there and back. And it was good to accomplish something while working out (picking up the book that was on hold), vs. running on the treadmill and going nowhere. Not sore today, which is a bonus too.
Maybe those Dutch are on to something.
